What is FUS/T for Hair Restoration?

FUS/T (Follicle Unit Strip Transplant surgery) is a procedure used to harvest strips of hair follicles from donor areas, allowing for sufficient hair follicles to be transplanted to other recipient areas. This procedure gathers a thin strip of skin containing the harvested hair follicles, and it is seen as a reliable hair transplant technique.

The Follicle Unit Strip Transplant surgery is considered one of the best methods to get the finest hair follicles from the donor area. Donor areas are areas in which there is dense hair growth, ensuring high quality hair follicles are transplanted to the recipient area for the best results. Once the strip of skin has been harvested, the hair follicles will be isolated, and transplanted to the recipient area individually.

Are there circumstances where FUS/T is not advisable?

The state of the donor area will affect whether FUS/T is a suitable technique for hair transplantation or not. Should there not be a sufficient amount of viable hair follicles in the donor area, then Follicle Unit Strip Surgery is not recommended. The scope of hair loss will be assessed to determine the best technique to achieve the best results.

Healing of the donor area in FUS/T surgery

The incision made to harvest the strip of skin will ultimately leave a linear scar. This shouldn’t be of great concern, as the scar will be very thin and hair growth surrounding the scar will cover the area sufficiently. The scar will thus not be visible once hair reaches the usual length.

FUS/T  vs. FUE (Follicle Unit Excision)

The other method used in Dr. André Nel’s hair transplant procedure is called FUE (Follicle Unit Excision), and can be used exclusively, or in combination with Follicle Unit Strip Transplant surgery, depending on the individual’s case. Follicle Unit Excision involves the harvesting of single hair follicles, by means of a punch like instrument, which are then transplanted to the recipient area.

In the case of Follicle Unit Strip Transplant surgery, our team will work together to separate the hair follicles from the strip of hair, keeping the follicles chilled in a solution to maintain their structural integrity, and preventing them from drying out.
