Businessman and entrepreneur, Niall Scanlon, a man whose work and lifestyle is comprised of being in the public eye and meeting people face-to-face, was confronted with what 80% of all men eventually suffer from, hair loss. Niall came to The Hair, Skin & Wellness Clinic for a consultation and 9 months later had a fully restored healthy head of hair.
How did hair loss affect Niall's lifestyle?
In the past, Niall wore his hair combed back but as the hair in his frontal zone began to thin and his hair line began to recede, he felt the need to style his hair forward in an attempt to hide the affected area.
What frustrated Niall was that his hair no longer provided effective cover when outdoors and the condition was worsening. He was conscious of the wind blowing his hair up and exposing his already high frontal zone and receding hairline.
What were Niall's primary concerns about losing his hair?
Niall was bothered that his hair was thinning on-top, especially his receding hairline, also his loss of hair in the frontal zone and thinning in the crown area. For Niall the prospect of going completely bald was not appealing.
What stage of hair loss had Niall reached when he began considering hair restoration?
Niall’s hair loss was between a Norwood III and Norwood IV on the Norwood Hair Loss Scale when he first came to visit The Hair, Skin & Wellness Clinic.
He always had a relatively high forehead and like most men, this actually complemented his features. However, because of the thinning hair in the frontal zone, there was only a small bit of hair left in the frontal tuft and this inadequately framed his face. The “aspect ratio” of his face had changed and made him look older. We needed to “frame” his face again.
Why did Niall choose The Hair, Skin & Wellness Clinic?
Like most men, Niall wanted to take control of the situation. He could no longer style his hair in ways that would cover the affected area and soon realised that professional advice would be his next approach. Niall then contacted The Hair, Skin & Wellness Clinic and arranged a consultation with Dr. Nel to discuss his own hair restoration options.

“On first observation Niall had a strong donor area with excellent hair characteristics. He was also realistic about the height of his prospective new hairline and preferred a conservative height which matched his original relatively high hairline. Our main objective is for a newly transplanted hairline to look perfectly natural.”
The Procedure - The Day Before
"In most of our hair transplant cases we make the incisions, which are the holes in which we implant the hair follicles, the night prior to the surgery. This technique has played a fundamental role in the great success we've achieved in the quality of our hair transplant results. This allows the release of Growth Factors from the small recipient site wounds which create ideal conditions with ample essential growth factors the next morning when and where the hair follicles are placed. It also allows me to “take-my-time” in making very careful and precise incisions which minimize injury to adjacent residual hair follicles.
The Procedure - The Day Of
"We began by performing a FUS/T (Follicle Unit Strip Transplant) strip harvest from the heart of the Safe Donor Area (SDA). I always take a conservative strip width, never wider than 10mm and should I need more grafts, I harvest them via FUE (Follicle Unit Excision) technique above and below the FUT strip wound. So there’s never any pressure on taking chances with the FUT strip width, because additional grafts will be harvested via FUE. I often exceed the number of grafts we initially decide on. Another great benefit of doing FUE above and below the FUT strip wound during a FUT/FUE combo is that it further lowers the wound closure tension which enhances the chances of a thin scar post-op."
5 Months Post-Op
"As Niall had been following all of my instructions, his newly transplanted hair follicles grew on his scalp, plus his residual hair follicles responded and reversed the AGA (Androgenetic Alopecia) process and the overall effect was a significantly improved hair volume. By five months post-op he was looking like most patients at 9 months post-op. Niall was overjoyed with results thus far and was looking forward to further progress."
10 Months Post-Op - SMP
"At ten months post-op Niall had a great result. His hairline and frontal zone were perfect and his crown area was much improved. In order to further enhance the appearance around the crown, we treated the area with Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP). This is where we make tattoo-type dots in the superficial skin layers and the cumulative effect is reducing the reflection of light from the scalp. This creates an illusion of hair density, providing a thicker, fuller look."
"Combinations of treatments ultimately work the best in hair transplant surgery. In Niall’s case, he implemented almost all the options available that I recommended. The combined nett effect has given us a powerful and natural result. SMP and mesotherapy treatments are adjuncts to the hair restoration process and combinations work better than monotherapy. At The Hair, Skin & Wellness Clinic our sole focus is to meet our clients goals and objectives which must be in line with what we think is achievable. The final result must be a natural look that is satisfying to our client and meets or exceeds their expectations."
What differences do you see in Niall now?
"Niall has always been a confident man but now I think he conveys more confidence than when we first met. A rewarding element from a successful hair transplant is the relief and quiet sense of satisfaction it gives the individual. It is such a personal thing, that it is hard to explain.
Is Niall's hair permanently restored?
"The AGA (Androgenetic Alopecia) process is mediated by the Genetic Code and just because you have had a hair transplant it doesn’t mean the Genetic Code won’t stop doing what it was programmed to do. If you don’t fight the process on an ongoing basis by taking the medications, the AGA process will continue and although the transplanted follicles will always remain and survive, it may develop a “disconnect” between transplanted and residual (non-transplanted) hair follicles."
"Therefore it is imperative to continue with medical treatment (as long as there are no contra indications) and I encourage all my patients to follow up with me at least once a year. This is not just to see how their hair has progressed, my greatest pleasure is to see the positive impact that hair restoration has had on their lives. It is such a privilege to have an opportunity to positively impact people’s lives. Everyone at The Hair, Skin & Wellness Clinic has this ethos."
What are the plans for Niall's hair for the future?
"Niall understands the underlying principles of hair restoration, that there is a commitment required from the patient’s side on an on-going basis. It’s not a once-off thing. You have to work at it constantly. It’s a bit like going to the gym, you have to do it regularly otherwise things will go south. If Niall wants to maintain great results he needs to follow my instructions and embed them into his routine.
